Yoga with Mary Jo

My connection to, interest in and practice of yoga is not about difficult poses or physical exertion - it is about connecting to the body, connecting to the emotions and connecting to the energy. It is about breath and awareness and kindness and nurturing and allowing our experiences.

As a teacher, I am compassionate and understanding of the body. I have countless years of experience of teaching gentle yoga, yoga for seniors, as well as supporting pregnant women and mothers through yoga and doula work. These groups are navigating very different experiences, but all are moving through change in their bodies and lives, which comes with emotional and energetic shifts as well. I am passionate about supporting people, helping them to feel supported and seen, to care for their bodies and their spirits as well, and to feel comfortable being present with their experiences.

I do not teach advanced or “work-out” yoga. I teach nurturing yoga for awareness and presence in the body and soul. I am here to support you in all ways.

Yoga Classes

Gentle Yoga Mondays 10:00 - 11:00 am, Thursdays 10:00- 11:00 am, EST Classes are virtual at this time
Gentle yoga classes are for everyone. They are nurturing practices to help students connect with and support their body and mind. They include both stretching and strengthening in a slow-paced sequence of postures often based on a specific focus. I am here to support my students and get to know them and their needs. I design my classes for the students and often include modifications to accommodate for injuries, pain or limitations. These classes support the body but also the mind - by nurturing you in all ways through therapeutic movement, breathing techniques, mindfulness practices, guided relaxation and connection with others.

Prenatal Yoga , In person classes are held at St. Mary’s Hospital Saturdays 10:30 - 11:45 am and Wednesdays 6-7:15 pm EST Class is also live streamed on Zoom
Supporting pregnant mamas as they navigate the physical, emotional, and mental experience of this time of transformation. Designed to prepare the body and mind for labor and birth and relieve some of the discomforts of pregnancy. My classes are a blend of breathing techniques, postures, mindfulness, guided relaxation and childbirth education. Classes are a time for moms to focus on themselves and their babies, while also connecting with other moms in a supportive community.

Yoga for Moms Please email for information
Following birth, moms are no longer attending prenatal yoga classes, but still have a need for both support of mind and body as well as a community of other moms. My Yoga for Moms classes focus on supporting moms as they heal from birth and navigate motherhood. This class incorporates breathing techniques, fostering the mind-body connection, postures and guided relaxation, all within the community of other mothers. Designed to help mothers care for themselves as they care for their babies and families, this is a time for mothers to be supported and cared for.

You can register for all classes on the MindBody website or app. You will find the classes under Mary Jo Lowery Yoga.

Here’s what some of my students have to say:

Mary Jo’s prenatal classes were something short of transformative for me. They were what I looked forward to most each week, as well as what I have missed most since having my baby. I felt so connected to my body and my baby every time I walked into class. Aside from my own internal journey, connecting with other expecting mothers was such a treasure. A small community of mothers there to laugh with, console, and commiserate with every week on an intimate level. Mary Jo made every woman feel welcomed, loved, and appreciated. My only regret was waiting until I was 20 weeks pregnant to start attending! Never enough thanks in the world for Mary Jo and these classes and how they helped me through nearly 42 weeks of pregnancy.
I have always loved your concern for the body...being mindful of what part you need to breathe into and relax. Jody and I always said we felt better after each class when before we didn’t know if we were up to it! Your teaching technique is special, and you deserve as much credit as possible for keeping us peaceful in mind and body.
It’s hard to explain what I like so much about your yoga class, except that when I go to a different instructor I’m not satisfied. You manage to be both soothing and challenging. I feel that I can trust your knowledge of the human body, and I love it when you explain in simple terms what we’re doing and why. You have a gift!
I have been doing yoga for probably about four years. Before that, I did adult ballet and stretch/strengthen classes. I have lots of osteoarthritis and very bad knees. Between yoga, at least two times a week, 2 deep stretch classes a week, and the treadmill here and there, I was pain free all the time.

When this pandemic arose, I became very concerned about how I was going to feel. A friend referred me to your classes. I have not missed a class since. I thoroughly enjoy every one of them. I love the variety and the fact that you listen when someone contacts you with some particular part of the body that needs to be addressed.
You have a very calming and soothing nature, and that is paramount for teaching these classes. Even though you cannot visually see us all the time during class, I very much feel your presence and particularly appreciate the reminders. You have been a bright light in my life ever since the first class. With much appreciation for you and your willingness to continue to help us feel good about ourselves.
For well over 10 years you have been my teacher. Often throughout that period I have been tempted not to show up for class. I have had as many excuses as there are yoga poses, but I would force myself to go. Not once, in all of those years, did I ever leave class wishing I hadn’t come!!! On the contrary, I’m always delighted to have come. When you suggest that we thank ourselves for showing up, that we feel proud for taking such good care of ourselves, I take your words to heart. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a direct correlation between my continuing yoga practice and my continuing good health - both mentally and physically.
As a teacher: you are so very encouraging of people doing things the way that is best for them and supportive of when we get mixed up or out of form. I feel that you are looking out for our bodies too by reminding us of how we should be doing things to prevent injury. That help gives me a sense of security. You are not judgmental. What I really like is that the class has a sense of humor. We can laugh at ourselves and each other in gentle good ways; always forgiving. [example: walk your hand toward your feet!] I also enjoy times when we try new poses or techniques. I like the challenge and the humor needed to do differently. It is unspoken but I feel that privacy is respected. Class is a safe place. All of this [encouragement, support, humor, respect] contributes to a special yoga experience each time. Our yoga classes are hard to define because so much of the essence is in the atmosphere and spirit you generate with us. Thank you so much for each and every time.
