Doula Services with Mary Jo
I have been a doula for over twenty years now and have attended more than 300 births. I bring that expertise to each of my births, as well as my nurturing, loving and encouraging spirit to support mothers on their journey to motherhood.
It is an absolute honor and pleasure to support women in seeing and stepping into their innate strength and beauty as they move through one of the most challenging and powerful experiences of their life. My role is to be by their side to answer questions, support them in being as comfortable as possible throughout the process, help them to make decisions as they come up, to be their support system as they move through all the physical and emotional waves, and to be their rock when they need it.
Leaning on the combination of my vast experience as well as my intuitive awareness of what my clients are feeling, I am able to guide my clients through planning for birth and their labor and birth, minimizing discomfort and fear, supporting awareness and presence, and making your birth experience as smooth, powerful and beautiful as possible.
Pregnancy & Doulas during a Pandemic
I am very much aware that during this unexpected pandemic, pregnancy, labor and birth are very different. Pregnancy is meant to be a time of joy and anticipation of the life you are creating, which it still can be, but during this time, there is also grief and fear of the experience being very different than many had hoped or expected. I am aware of that and I honor and celebrate you for all you are navigating.
At this time, all hospitals in Richmond are allowing doulas to be present for births. That said, if for any reason that changed, I have experience with providing birth support virtually and have a full system set up for that should it be necessary. Being virtual does not mean there is less value in having a doula for your journey. Please know that I am just as committed (if not more!) to my doula clients during these challenging times.
I have outlined below the process through which I am currently support clients (taking pandemic protocol into account):
First, we will confirm that our schedules align and address a few logistics - please contact me to inquire about your due date and let me know who your care provider is and where you plan to birth.
We will then schedule an initial consultation either in person or over the phone/video to discuss what you're looking for, what concerns or thoughts you have about your pregnancy and birth, how I work and how our styles align.
If we both feel it is a good fit, we will move forward with working together, which involves paying a deposit and signing an agreement.
I recommend that my doula clients participate in my prenatal yoga classes as the classes benefit every mother and also help us to establish a deeper connection if that feels good for you.
I recommend that you take a childbirth class with your partner and during or after that class, you will draft a birth plan.
The next time we meet is after your childbirth class (around the end of your 2nd trimester, 28ish weeks). We will discuss your birth plan as well as discussing your pregnancy and any concerns or needs you may have.
Our next meeting is at about the 36 week mark. During this meeting, we discuss and prepare for what you can expect in the weeks to come as well as the plan for labor and birth, including many tips and techniques for you and your partner to navigate the experience. During pandemic times, if necessary due to hospital regulations, we also use this meeting to discuss and do a dry-run of how we will connect virtually during your labor and birth.
We then stay in touch after every appointment until labor begins.
Once labor begins, I help you to remain comfortable at home as long as possible and determine when is best to go to the hospital and help keep you comfortable and informed once you arrive as well.
During active labor, I am right there with you, coaching you, helping you and your partner to move through your labor and delivery, and be your support system throughout.
I stay with you through the labor and birth and then depart to give your family time and space to bond.
I check in with you within the first day or two post-partum in the hospital and then stay in touch following your birth and return home to make sure all is well for everyone.
